Students Digging for New Construction

OUR EXCITING SUMMER OF CONSTRUCTION

Thanks to the support of our Jeffco community, the passage of the 2018 Bond and Mill Levy allows us to make investments in our buildings, programs and people.

As a part of our Capital Improvement Program, valued between $700-750 million, we are investing $70 million from our bond in 2019 — with significant work completed during the summer months. These dollars have funded improvement projects across our district, including: athletic facility updates, new playgrounds, flooring projects, safety and security upgrades with many more improvements to come.

INVESTING IN OUR ATHLETES

Over the 2019 summer months, big changes came to the outdoor athletic facilities at eight of our schools — including turf field replacements and installations — creating an environment that is more safe and durable for student athletes now and for years to come.

Improvements happened around the field as well.  At some schools, we replaced cinder tracks with all-weather surfaces where these new tracks will not only provide our student athletes the best arena for competition but will also increase access during winter months as well.

These field and/or track updates happened across our district and took place at:

• Arvada H.S.   • Evergreen H.S.
• Chatfield H.S  • Lakewood H.S.
• Conifer H.S.  • Ralston Valley H.S.
• Dakota Ridge H.S    • West Jefferson M.S.

SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS AT PLAY

Playground renovations took place at eight of our schools this summer. Projects ranged from new and additional playground structures to surface replacements.

These schools will welcome new playground areas in Fall, 2019:

 • Wilmore-Davis E.S.  • Ralston E.S.
 • Free Horizon K-8  • Belmar E.S.
 • Columbine Hills E.S    • Welchester E.S.
 • Patterson E.S.

UPGRADES TO OUR FLOORING SURFACES

New flooring in classrooms, common spaces and gyms can make a real impact in the look and feel of our buildings. At eight of our schools, some flooring upgrades began during the school year and were completed over spring break.

DESIGNING FOR HIGH-IMPACT

Designing a new building or addition for a school community now and in the future is no easy task. It takes collaboration, iterative design and creativity — all elements that are at the heart of our six Design Advisory Groups (DAGs). Our DAG groups are comprised of school leaders, teachers, students, parents and community members who work with architects throughout the entire design process for their new building, addition or renovation.

DAG members work with architects to create guiding design principles for their school, share how their space functions and the role it plays in their community. We will keep you up-to-date as designs are finalized and groundbreakings are set.

These schools are due for major renovations in the coming years:

• Alameda International Jr/Sr H.S.
• Arvada H.S.
• Green Mountain H.S.
• Kendrick Lakes E.S.
• Columbine H.S.
• Wilmot E.S.

EXPANDING OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL CAPACITY

Three of our middle schools are growing to meet the needs of their communities — with large multi-classroom additions nearing completion. At Creighton, Ken Caryl and Summit Ridge Middle Schools -  these expansions will help their programs better serve incoming 6th grade classes and their instructional needs.

Our middle school additions — funded by district reserves — will open their doors to students for the 2019–2020 school year.

PRIORITIZING SAFETY AND SECURITY

In January 2018, we completed the state mandated lock upgrade to all fire doors in our district buildings. We are going above this requirement by replacing all of our locks where students are present — this includes common spaces, entrance areas and counseling rooms. In a further step towards increased building security, we are placing additional safety cameras at 32 of our facilities this summer — bringing these schools up to our district standard.

Additional schools will follow with these safety updates or are included within a larger school improvement project.

OUR COMMITMENT TO JEFFCO SCHOOLS

We are thrilled with the work completed during this first summer of construction and look forward to bringing improvements to all of our schools throughout the 2018 Bond Program. The investment made by Jeffco voters allows us to provide critical capital improvements at our 155 schools. Creating educational environments where students can thrive, learn and grow — for generations to come.

BOND BY THE NUMBERS

How Bond money is spentThe Bond Program allows us to provide our students and educators safe, high-quality learning environments. Specifically, Jeffco Public Schools will use these funds to:
• Add and expand career/technical education facilities
• Upgrade safety and security equipment in school buildings
• Repair, renovate, equip and reconstruct buildings to ensure our schools are safe, efficient and accessible to all students, including those with disabilities
• Construct, furnish, equip and support needs in buildings and classrooms at all schools in the district, including charter schools

Mill Levy Update

Since the passage of the 2018 Mill Levy Override, we have made big investments in programs that serve our students and the people who are so committed to the work of this district.

With 2018 Mill Levy dollars, we are:
• Increasing the competitiveness with surrounding districts to attract and retain quality teachers
• Increasing school safety and security including increased mental health supports and counseling
• Expanding career/technical education & STEM options
• Improving classroom materials and technology
• Expanding full-day early childhood education
