Performance Evaluation Committee

Jeffco’s Performance Evaluation Committee (formerly the 1338 Committee) is a diverse group of stakeholders with the objective to provide a vision of what an evaluation system that thinks outside of the checkbox might look like. The members of this committee serve a two-year term and act as an advisory group to the Board of Education to measure the fairness, effectiveness, credibility, and professional quality of the educator performance evaluation system, along with its processes and procedures.  The committee includes at least one of each of the following:  a Jeffco educator, a Jeffco administrator, a Jeffco principal, a parent with a child attending school in Jeffco, a JCEA member, and a community member who does not have a child in the district.

Over the course of the 2020-21 school year, the committee met seven times.  We built upon the work of identifying the key values of Growth, Learning, Support, Student Achievement & Outcomes, and Differentiation for the district to focus on as part of the evaluation process, communicating the work of the committee to key stakeholders, identifying participants for a limited evaluation pilot for the 2021-22 school year, and creating a plan for implementation.  Recommendations for future work and process changes will be ongoing and fluid.

During the 2021-22 school year the committee’s work focused on monitoring the implementation of the limited evaluation pilot aimed at building in more opportunities for self-reflectiongoal setting, and self- directed professional learning.  The committee believes a system that pushes educator practice will recognize and reward strategic risk taking, build in iteration, and honor that an educator’s learning process will involve successes and lessons learned.  There were 12 schools and approximately 115 educators who officially participated in the pilot and one school with 19 additional educators who participated unofficially.

While the pilot evaluation and the focus on self-reflectiongoal setting, and self-directed professional learning only addresses one small part of an educator’s evaluation, we believe this is a step in the right direction of our desired outcome to create an evaluation system that supports the concept that genuine and honest communication and feedback from diverse sources creates a safe space for growth.

Therefore, we are in the process of trying to expand the pilot evaluation for the 2022-23 school year to allow us to gather more data and feedback from participants.  If the data continues to reflect that educators and evaluators believe it is an appropriate step to take toward creating an evaluation system that is more self-directed and educator driven, we will make a recommendation to the Board for continued expansion and/or full implementation for the 2023-24 school year.
