We are pleased to announce that school will reopen in Jeffco Public Schools the week of August 24th. Start days may vary by school and grade. In July, schools will be in contact with families to find out about their plans for return to school and to share additional scheduling information. Teachers are still scheduled to return to work on August 12th. School-based classified staff are still scheduled to return to work on August 18th. The new school start date is intended to provide additional time for teacher planning, professional learning, and school preparation. Administrators will be sharing additional scheduling information with staff as it is known.

Since the May 22nd release of our Draft Restart Model to our families and community, we have received additional updates and information from Jeffco Public Health, CDE, metro Denver school districts, and the Governor’s office. The gradual reopening of businesses, restaurants, and other public use areas is also informing our plans.

We have also been evaluating the survey feedback from the community on our Draft Restart Model in real time in order to keep our planning process moving forward. In this message, we are providing an interim update in advance of the release of our final Restart Model on July 8th, in order to keep the community and our Jeffco families informed as some decisions are made.

Reopening Schools:
Our goal is to restore in-person learning to the greatest extent possible while adhering to public health requirements. In order to open schools for in-person learning, we will need to implement certain mitigation strategies. As staff and students return to the classroom, important safety protocols will be in place to limit exposure and transmission of COVID-19. Among them:

  • 6' social distancing will be practiced to the fullest level possible
  • Use of common spaces: cafeteria, gymnasium, auditoriums, is prohibited for large and mixed-group use
  • Staff and student face coverings are required when social distancing cannot be maintained with consideration for exceptions, if necessary, for the health and wellness of certain students or staff
  • Symptom screening
  • Student grouping limitations wherever possible
  • Regular hand washing
  • Shared items and school materials will be reduced
  • Increased building ventilation and fresh air mixture to the greatest extent possible
  • Enhanced cleaning and decontamination of buildings and buses
If a virus outbreak requires the closure of the district, individual schools, or affects specific groups of students, we will be ready to serve students in a remote environment as outlined in our Remote Learning Plan | Español.

For the health and wellness of our staff, we will consider appropriate and timely mitigating measures, that may include changes to work site setup or work site location. More information about this process will be provided to staff in July.

Elementary Schools:
We are also pleased to announce as part of our RestartJeffco effort that we will be restoring a 100% in-person learning option for elementary (PreK, K-5, and K-6 buildings) students, along with a remote learning option for families to choose. We will be putting in place numerous public health provisions to protect the health of our students, staff, and community as we reopen schools.

Middle & High Schools:
Jeffco Public Schools continues to evaluate international systems, coordinate with other regional districts, review and consider guidance from public health, and adapt to changing conditions as we consider our secondary (middle and high) schools. PreK-8 schools will reopen with a 100% in-person model for PreK-5 (elementary) students, with decisions still to come for middle (grades 6-8) and high (grades 9-12) school students.

Next steps:
Final determinations and more detail on our RestartJeffco plan will be released July 8th. We understand you may have questions specific to your school or personal circumstance. Please hang on until we release the final plan on July 8th and you hear from your school(s) later in July. We are working through this process as quickly as possible. Please continue to check the RestartJeffco website for details and some great summer resources!
