Superintendent's Corner

Superintendent & Chief Learner Dr. Jason Glass

Dear Jeffco Community,

On September 6, the Jeffco Public Schools Board of Education approved the language that will appear on this fall’s ballot for a mill levy override (for ongoing expenses such as paying teachers and staff and student academic and career/technical programs) as well as a bond question (for school and facility construction and renovation projects).

Colorado ballot questions are notoriously long legal statements that include the tax increase amount and other language required under the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) Amendment.

In Jeffco’s case, our mill levy override and bond ballot questions will include additional language that adds some specifics on how the funds would be used, as well as some accountability provisions and restrictions on uses.

The Bulldog Builders

Arvada High School student Monica Medina does some work with a circular saw as part of the school’s pre-apprenticeship construction trades program.High school pep rallies are always a high-energy way to start the day at Arvada High School. After it’s done, most students head off to class with a Chromebook, but there are some who prefer a shed and a paintbrush. These students are in Arvada’s pre-apprenticeship construction trades program. It’s one of half a dozen academic pathways offered by the school.

“We want our students to be able to attend a program and leave high school where they can actually be certified and be able to do something with that right out of high school,” said Principal Gina Rivas.

A partnership with Warren Tech helps make it happen. The program is led by someone who came directly from the world of construction trades to teaching, Mark Frates, who not so long ago was an HVAC tech working on air condition, heating, chillers, and boilers.

Another school year is underway in Jeffco! Here are some reminders for families about how to stay in the loop throughout the year:

  • Ensure your contact information in JeffcoConnect is always up to date. New phone number? New email address? Don't forget to include JeffcoConnect in your update procedures.
  • Follow the district and your school on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Social media channels have become the fastest and most efficient way to share information. It is highly recommended families include this as part of a well-rounded communications toolbox.
  • Download the app for easy access to school and district webpages, calendars, news, and push notifications. Search in your app store for "jeffcoschools co."
  • Be sure you check your email and other communication tools often. Also, be aware, if you elect to unsubscribe from any email sent by anyone in Jeffco Public Schools, you will be unsubscribing from all emails coming from anywhere in our district. We recommend you simply delete any emails you do not want.
  • Want to know about things like how we handle alerts and closures, what our emergency procedures are, or what's on the lunch menu (to name a few)? Visit the For Families page on our website, where you will also find links to systems like JeffcoConnect, Nutrislice, and Campus.
  • Bookmark your school's webpage and check it often for updates.
  • If your student purchases meals at school, set up an account in SchoolCafe, which includes the option to turn on low balance alerts to ensure your student always has meal funds available.
