State CompetitorsState music festivals are wrapping up, and Jeffco has been well represented! The Colorado chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) selected the top nine high school orchestras at the beautiful Macky Auditorium at CU Boulder. Congratulations to Arvada West High School, directed by Craig Melhorn, and Golden High School, directed by Katharine Parker, for being among the top orchestras in the state!

Based on their scores at regional competitions, three Jeffco bands were invited to the Colorado Bandmasters Association High School State Concert Band Festival. Arvada West High School, directed by Craig Melhorn, Bear Creek High School, directed by Tammy Ahmed, and Dakota Ridge High School, directed by Dylan Ford, were selected among the top 32 bands in the state of Colorado. Jeffco also had three middle school bands participate: Deer Creek Middle School, directed by Jim Sudano, Everitt Middle School, directed by Ilse Reardon, and Ken Caryl Middle School, directed by Cathy Wahl. Strong middle school programs are essential and important in the musical development of Jeffco students.

CBA and ASTA are extremely competitive every year, and these directors are helping to put Jeffco in the forefront of music education in Colorado. Congratulations to the teachers and students who are striving for excellence with the music they create!
