The Final Beam Goes Up at Marshdale

Marking a major construction milestone

Marshdale Beam Goes Up

"It's so cool!"

A phrase that was echoed by multiple little – yet enthusiastic – voices at Marshdale Elementary as they gathered to watch the final beam go up for their new building. Often called a topping out ceremony in construction, the placement of the final beam marks a significant project milestone.

"Today, we are doing the topping out of steel," commented Hilary Porter, Jeffco Project Manager at Marshdale. "It's the last piece of steel going up in the building. Now we will be able to focus on finishing the roof and interior of the building. It harkens back to barn raisings. Putting an evergreen on the last piece of wood that goes up to help bring good fortune to the building."

Cold and snowy conditions were no match for these mountain kids, who all gathered outside to watch the final beam go into place. Before the ceremony, students and staff signed a separate beam, which was later placed in framing – signifying that they are a critical piece of this remarkable place.

The community is eagerly looking forward to the completion of their new school, which is being built right next to their current facility. Once complete, the new building will have the capacity to serve up to 380 students with a separate preschool facility,  a makerspace, commercial-grade kitchen, large turf field, and interactive playground. The building design also incorporates beautiful mountain views, native plants, and water-conscious landscaping – capturing and honoring the beauty of their unique location.

Funding for the new Marshdale Elementary is thanks to Jeffco voters and their support of the 2018 bond measure. Budgeted at $16.5 million, the new building is set for completion in the fall of 2022 – when it will be ready to welcome students and staff through its doors.

"It's a whole new chapter," remarked Zac Martin, Marshdale principal. "With a whole new building to start new memories for all the Marshdale community, and now we're on our way to start working on the inside."
