Will the curriculum change for 6th grade students when they are in the middle school?
Sixth grade students will continue to receive core instruction based on the Colorado Academic Standards regardless if they are attending 6th grade at a middle school, a K - 8, or an elementary school.

What assessments are 6th graders expected to take each year?

Each year, Jeffco 6th graders take the MAP assessments in reading and mathematics three times throughout the year. Sixth graders also participate in Colorado Measure of Academic Success (CMAS) each year. They are tested in English/language arts and math. Sixth graders in dual language programs are tested three times throughout the year to gauge reading comprehension. Students who qualify for English as a Second Language (ESL), take the ACCESS for ELLs assessment in January and February.

How will the 6th grade transition impact instrumental music in my area?
In partnership with our instrumental music staff, we are working to create a plan to support instrumental music in each articulation area. We are excited to consider the possibility of instrumental music electives for our 6th grade students. More information will be available in late October or early November.

Do 6th graders in middle schools take elective courses?

Yes. The middle school model provides a wide range of elective offerings. Sixth grade students will have the opportunity to engage in these elective offerings.

What is the school’s process for accelerating my child in math?
Schools will collect a Body of Evidence (CMAS, MAP, Work habits, current grade, and teacher recommendation) to determine if your child will be accelerated in 6th grade. If a student is at grade level in 6th grade, they will have the opportunity to be accelerated in 7th grade if appropriate.

What might a parent expect in regards to the math placement process?

An initial Body of Evidence will be collected by 5th grade teachers in early spring. Elementary and middle school math teachers will consider the Body of Evidence to make final decisions. Parents will receive notification of placement in May.
If any additional testing is required, the middle school will contact parents.
Questions about placement should be directed to the middle school.

What might a student expect in regards to the math placement process?
Students will be made aware of the Body of Evidence. Students will receive notification of placement in Math 6 or Math 6/7.
Questions about placement should be directed to their 5th grade teacher.
