Vivian Elementary First-Graders Get Big Surprise

Vivian Elementary studentsOn December 20, Wish for Wheels partnered with Rettew and Jonah Energy to donate 25 bikes and helmets to each of Vivian Elementary's first-graders! Wish for Wheels is a nonprofit organization that gives brand new bicycles and helmets to kids in low-income communities. Rettew is an environmental engineering firm in Golden, which not only helped fund the bikes and helmets, but also came to Vivian and worked with the fourth grade class to build each bike.

This event was kept a huge secret from all of the first-grade students. Wish for Wheels came early in the afternoon, and unloaded all the boxes into the gym. The fourth-graders, who work as buddies with first-graders often, got to come in and build the bikes with the help of the volunteers. Then, at the end of the day, they held a big surprise party. The first-graders were led to the gym and each child was presented with their very own brand new bike! Parents were in on the secret, and were in attendance at the party, as well. Smiles were on every face as students left for winter break, with a brand new bicycle at their side.
