Feb 21 Bear Creek High School Threat Alert

UPDATE 2/21 7:35am the student who made the threat is in custody. We will update families again later today.

Dear Bear Creek HS Families,

Late last night we received several reports that a student made a threat of violence toward our school via social media. Law enforcement and Jeffco Public Schools security staff have been actively investigating the threat all night. As of now, the student in question is not in custody.

School will proceed as scheduled, however, the following security measures are in place:

1. As is our normal procedure, all students and staff must enter our school building via the main entrance on the east side. If students or staff exit the building at any time, they must re-enter the building via the main entrance. There is to be no entrance into our school building via any other doors other than by law enforcement or Jeffco security.

2. If the student in question comes to school today, the student will be immediately intercepted by school security or law enforcement officers. The student will not be allowed contact with students and likely taken off site as soon as possible. The student will not be allowed on school property until the threat is fully investigated, a threat assessment is completed, and a safety plan put in place.

3. There will be additional school security and law enforcement at our school until this situation is resolved.

Please take time to talk with your student about this situation and inform your student we have safety protocols at school and measures are in place to keep them safe at school. If your student will not be attending school today, call the attendance line, 303-982-8813.

Thank you to all who reported the threat. Remind your student that any potential safety concerns should be reported to the school, law enforcement, or Safe2Tell no matter how insignificant they believe it might be. Students may call the Safe2Tell program to report safety concerns anonymously at 877-542-7233, or report online at https://safe2tell.org/.

It saddens me to relay this type of news, but it is critical to school safety to keep everyone informed. If you need to contact the school, please be patient. I expect we will be handling a lot of calls.

Thank you in advance for your support, understanding, and patience. We will get through this together. I will be sending another communication as soon as we have new information, or at the end of the school day.

Sincerely,
Lynn Torr
Principal
