Senior Isaac Mohr works on a project in the Sobesky Academy computer lab.Welcome to the wild world of mountain biking; it's a world Isaac Mohr knows well.

“I’ve raced mountain bikes for the past four years. I just finished up my fourth season. I’ve raced with the Evergreen High School team. I was team captain this year. The cycling environment is amazing,” said Mohr.

In addition to handling racing obstacles, he's also had to navigate the much trickier challenge of his mental health. It got to the point where he missed long stretches of his education.

"I knew I couldn’t return immediately to a regular public high school. The social stresses of high school, the academic pressure and senior year, having to catch up."

For Mohr, the answer was Sobesky Academy, a place where he could make his mental health a priority while rebuilding his academics.

“[It was] kind of my last hope,” he said.

Not long after he enrolled, the staff realized there was something very special about this young man.

“One of the first things I saw in Isaac is that he was really an advocate, especially for younger students, and just showed a lot of empathy for their situations and a lot of leadership and he really developed a lot of great rapport,” said counselor Dina Klancir.

“I kind of had an idea of what people here would be going through, but I didn’t fully understand, and I didn’t understand how some of the kids here are struggling,” said Mohr. “I’ve been there before and I know what it’s like. To help them, it makes me feel better knowing that they feel better.”

His method for reaching out is pretty simple.

“’You all right? What’s going on. You doing ok? Just checking in.’ I know when someone comes up to me, it feels pretty good,” said Mohr.

When he heard the news that the Sobesky staff had successfully nominated him as for a Jeffco Hero Award, his reaction was a bit of disbelief.

“I’ve never considered myself to be a person worthy of an award. I’ve really struggled with the way I think of myself,” he said.

He’s doing better, and now, with persistence and support from everyone who knows him and loves him, the life goals he wants to achieve, including becoming a commercial pilot, finally seem within reach.

“What comes naturally to you doesn’t always come naturally to people,” Klancir said to Mohr. “It’s really impactful to the students around you. I don’t think you realize how unique and special the things that you do really are.”
