The Equity & Excellence Art Exhibit is currently displayed at the Jeffco Public Schools Education Center located at 1829 Denver West Drive, Building # 27, Golden, CO from February 2 through April 4. Building hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. This unique show encourages art teachers from elementary, middle and high school to submit 2D and 3D student artwork that connects to cultural education and/or personal stories tied to diversity.
The Equity & Excellence Art Exhibit displays K-12 student artwork accompanied by personal artist statements and written descriptions that explain the educational process behind each creation. The show provides an opportunity for the community to view wonderful student art while gaining insight into the students’ learning process of the history, culture, skills and techniques that were taught during the creation of their artwork.
Developed in 2000 by Aimee Pickar, Visual Arts teacher at Three Creeks K-8 and Phyllis Bubeck, retired Visual Arts teacher from Wayne Carle Middle School, the Equity & Excellence Art Exhibit was created so that art teachers have a platform to celebrate and display student works of art that relate directly to topics of diversity, equity and culture. Since its inception, many educators have helped co-chair the show with Ms. Pickar, including Oberon Middle School teacher, Laurie Counterman and most recently, Shelton Elementary School teacher, Amber BonDurant.
Each year this amazing show grows as art teachers from across the district submit student artwork. The community also continues to show their support by attending the artist celebration event and purchasing student work. The artist celebration event will take place on Friday, March 10 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. and is open to the public.
The Jeffco Schools Foundation has been monumental in providing the funding, support and exposure for all district art shows. Without their support, the Equity & Excellence Art Exhibit would not have the opportunity to continue.
